At our August meeting, we displayed World War I memorabilia which members had brought along, items ranging through photos, scrapbooks, medals, letters from the King and even an ancient, and very heavy, Webley Mark VI revolver (dummy bullets!). Our talk for the evening was "The Crystal Palace at War", by Barrie McKay of the Crystal Palace Museum, very appropriate to the area and the time. We all learned things we didn't know before.
During members' half hour we heard briefly about the lives of several of the bravest women of the war - Elsie Knocker, Mairi Chisholm, Isabella Stenhouse, Lena Ashwell, Dorothie Feilding and Edith Cavell. Some of the most poignant poems of the war period were read, and the Wickham Warblers led the members in singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning".
Some of the memorabilia are shown in the pictures below. Hover your mouse over the big picture and a "Play" indicator will appear, which you can click.
