Kent - West Kent Federation 95th Birthday Celebration
We had lovely weather for the 95th birthday celebrations of West Kent W.I.s on 19th June 2013, at The Friars, Aylesford. The Friars is a Carmelite Priory with buildings a mix of the mediaeval and modern, and beautiful and extensive grounds.
The North Barn housed many displays, from kitchen memorabilia, pincushions, art and craft demonstrations and food tasting to Denman College information and a science display.
The chapels of The Friars housed the splendid floral displays from districts and branches on the theme of Women in Education, and the Piazza made an appropriate outdoor auditorium for performances throughout the day, readings, dances, sketches, singing, poetry, and even a Greek tragedy.
In the courtyard we could see the Scrappy Sam submissions, so varied, and so ingenious.
In the grounds there were opportunities to try croquet, orienteering and various other games, whilst "Henry VIII" strolled the grounds entertaining us with his "old wives' tales".
A splendid day, and a fitting showcase for the W.I. and its talented members.
